Dofollow and Nofollow links in SEO : What are the Differences?

What is the difference between do follow link no follow links

When it comes to SEO, the links that point to your site are of paramount importance. Google considers 2 types of links: DoFollow and NoFollow, but what are the differences and how can we gain backlinks?

In SEO, when we talk about links that point to a domain name or backlinks, it is implied that they are Dofollow, knowing that there also exist Nofollow links. What are the major differences between these two types of links, and what is the impact on SEO for your website?

This is one of the fundamentals of SEO when looking for the backlink as a blogger or when an SEO agency manages netlinking campaigns for the owner of a website.

You probably know that to gain positions in SEO it is necessary to have a good net-linking strategy or to regularly publish content optimizing them at best. With the many changes that have occurred with Google, natural search trends in 2018 are partly due to long content and voice SEO .

SEO: Dofollow and Nofollow

Nofollow and Dofollow attributes

In terms of natural referencing, the Dofollow and Nofollow attributes will determine the tracking of links or not for Google. On one hand, the links that will point to external sites since yours, and on the other those that will come from other websites pointing to yours.

The links will thus be able to attribute value or not to a site, in terms of authority and according to the attribute used. We will see below that it is the Do-follow link that will be primarily searched for SEO to gain positions on search engines. These links are also called back-links.

The main difference between the Dofollow and Nofollow links

The major difference between a Dofollow link and a Nofollow link can be simple to understand from an English / French translation point of view. The link Do follow means that it is to follow, as for the link No follow not to follow.

Dofollow: When the Google robot goes to your website and detects a Dofollow link, it considers it within its algorithm and gives a value to the site to which it points according to the authority you have. Conversely, if an external Dofollow link comes from a high authority site and points to your site, Google will consider it and will also assign a level of authority to your site. These are the links Dofollow pointing to your site, the backlinks, which will help to give you a better SEO.

Nofollow:  When the Google robot spends on a Nofollow link on your site, it will simply not follow it and continue to crawl your content. In this case a Nofollow link will not affect your SEO. In SEO only the link Dofollow will have importance and therefore weight to get you back in the search results.

Dofollow and Nofollow link structure

To determine if a link will be Dofollow or Nofollow it will be given an attribute thanks to the rel tag. However the Dofollow link is thus considered by default in the absence of a tag. In absolute terms, only a Nofollow link needs to be filled in by this attribute.

Here are what the links will look like:

<a href = “https : // www . bbc . com / “> bbc </a>

<a href = “https : // www . bbc . com / ”  rel =” dofollow ” > bbc </a>

<a href = “https : // www . bbc . com / ”  rel =” nofollow ” > bbc </a>

If my link points to the Nicki Jenns website but my anchor has absolutely no connection, Google may not value it.

How to get Dofollow links to improve SEO?

If you want to know how to improve the SEO of a WordPress site for example, you will necessarily go through inbound links to your site (back-links) for your SEO is boosted. There are several ways to get these Nofollow links and we will list 4 main ones:

The net-linking

  1. The net-linking

The first and simplest way is to use a netlinking strategy to get Dofollow links from websites. These backlinks may be more or less authoritative as we will see below.

The only drawback here is to invest a certain budget, depending on the net-linking campaign to deploy and the sites on which you want to place your links. The more authority a site has, the more expensive the link will be.

  1. Naturally place Dofollow links on site

A second method is to naturally place Dofollow links pointing to sites, which will bring complementary information to yours, and this in the hope that these sites will do the same for you.

Suffice to say that it is not won in advance, and that it is the goodwill of the site that you will mention via your DoFollow link. It will also be necessary to consider the authority of the websites on both sides. If you make a link to the Parisian site for example, do not expect in return a link from them!

Aim for sites that are complementary to yours and that are substantially of the same authority. The authority is based on several criteria including Trust Flow and Citation Flow that you can define via the Majectic SEO tool . It’s about defining the number of sites that talk about you, through DoFollow links pointing to your site.

The more you have, the more authority you have. Of course, these links will themselves come from sites with strong authority. If the site of Le Monde or Parisien inserts a link pointing to one of your articles, then you will have here a reputed link of strong authority.

  1. Resort to guest blogging

The guest blogging remains one of the best levers to gain backlinks quickly for site. It consists of exchanging Dofollow links with other bloggers on areas of expertise that are generally complementary or similar depending on the subject. In my case for example, I could call on a site specialized in SEO, to the extent that I am not an expert and that the topic does not compete with one of my articles positioned on the subject.

Conversely the SEO expert could for example deal with community management and interest in knowing the fundamentals of SEO. In similar areas, it would be a question of bringing angles and points of view on subjects that are not competitive, with those that you would have already developed.

The disadvantage of guest blogging is still related to the authority of the sites. It is sometimes difficult to exchange links with a site that starts or has no authority to help you get better positioning.

Finally, consider getting Dofollow links from highly authoritative bloggers becomes very difficult due to their frequent solicitation

  1. Comments on Do-follow sites

I put this method last, because it is not really Google Friendly to the extent that Google does not look favorably sites that put their comments in Dofollow. That is, if you leave a comment on one of these sites, by dragging a link, you get a back-link for your site, but pay attention to the relevance of the comment and the nature of the site.

It’s not about pasting comments on all sites being open to Dofollow comments. It will be easy for you to find a list of sites in Dofollow comments by typing the query on Google, but do not think that it will last or that it is a relevant method. She will have her time in my opinion!

Beware of open comments in Dofollow! Know how to consider them in light of Google..!

If you still want to use it, you must first avoid comments! Locate for starters the sites that are from your universe and only these. Do not leave a comment with your link on a jam site! Google will consider this link as a decoy because the principle works like anchors.

If you look at the structure of the Dofollow and Nofollow links above, you will see that the anchor is Nicki Jenns Blog, which is the one to use when you want to mention a site on the world of community management for example. The anchor must always be in relation to the link behind which is an article or the direct url of a site (homepage), therefore of its subject. The anchor usually picks up the main keyword of the article to see its title directly.

Netlinking or Link Building campaigns to boost your SEO

When websites get some authority and usually have a few years behind them, they regularly use net-linking or link building campaigns to boost their SEO.

This method involves going through SEO platforms or agencies that manage a portfolio of many bloggers / websites, on different levels in terms of authority.

Boost SEO with Dofollow links

This implies defining a budget that will be more or less consistent depending on the desired links and the sites on which they will be placed. We can talk about rates ranging from 100 € to more than 700 € for a Dofollow link, which quickly becomes exponential if you want several links on several sites.

As previously announced, the more authority a site has, that is, the more it will be cited by other sites, the more expensive the link will be.

The strategy of netlinking still has a clear advantage over the above methods, you will not be slowed down by the authority of a site. This does not mean that it will be effective to go directly to big sites of influence.

If the strategy of netlinking is well managed, the advice will follow on this subject and you will have a proposal that will go in the direction of your site … more than in yours!

Should we have a site with Dofollow or Nofollow links?

Difficult to pronounce for others but it is also a question of orientation of your site. For example, a professional site may be in Nofollow as long as it does not seek to promote competitors or other sites. On the other hand, he will be able to resort to guest-posting and netlinking.

For a blogger it is quite another thing, depending on the monetization or not site. In this case, if he is a publisher for netlinking actors, he will have to find the right balance and maintain coherence in the shared links. Bloggers are more inclined to place Dofollow links as a rule, but again, there is no rule but to follow what Google recommends.

Also remember the mandatory mentions for sponsored posts when you advertise for a third-party site or brand. This is particularly the case with influencers who keep a blog.
